Antwerp is now a major trendsetter in the European world of fashion and the list of internationally celebrated designers from Antwerp is growing all the time.Are you a fashion victim? Apparently, you are not alone, Every year, over 100,000 people visit Antwerpen to get a taste of Antwerp's tastes in fashion. Antwerp features a fashion museum and every year lots of people from all over the world attend to the Academy's Annual Show at the end of the academic season (around June). If you are planning a journey to Europe, this is also the best season because of the weather.
The 1990s
After Antwerp fashion designers had scored a number of successses in the national Gouden Spoel (Golden Spool) competition, the Antwerp fashion world really took off in march 1988. That was the year six young designers, namely Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk van Saene and Marina Yee took part in the British Designer Show in London. To everyone's surprise, they were the indisputable revelation of this international fashion trade fair and they soon became known as the 'Antwerp Six'. Veronique Branquinho (Nationalestraat 73), Veronique opened her own outlet in August 2003.
Francis (Steenhouwersvest 14) Design fashion and furniture, new and secondhand. If you're lucky, you can find end of season clothes from names like Ann Demeulemeester and Dirk Bikkembergs.

Elvis Pompilio (Nieuwe Gaanderij, hoek Huidevettersstraat) Wonderfully colorfull buts for happy occasions. This hatmaster recently opened a shop in London on Brampton Road.
Verso (Huidevettersstraat 39) Designer fashion for men by Dirk Bikkembergs, Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Prada Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Armani. Don't be scared now, go have a look at the clean cut interior.

DKNY (Lombardenvest) As in every big city, Dona Koran is well presented here in Antwerp. Not a very big shop, but with a tastefull selection.
Cocodrillo (Schuttershofstraat 7) Probably the best shoeshop in Antwerp. Names? Ann Demeulemeester, Jil Sander, Prada, Gucci, Versace, Armani, Voice & Gabbana.
Lieve Van Gorp (Hopland 1) The beautifull shop of Lieve Van Gorp, who makes clothes for both man and women, plus watching accesories.

Walter(St.-Antoniusstraat 12) Fashionguru Walter Van Beirendonck opened this cultshop mid-september 98 & already it promises to be an absolute nrl on the wishlist of fashionados. Be prepared to shop for collections of Dirk Van Saene, Courriges, Bless, Evisu, Stephen Sprouse, Vexed Generation, W<. and Mici de Mirode. interior wizzard Marc Newson, together with Wait himself and Dirk Van Saene, designed the shopconcept.

Helly Hansen Lockwood (Jezusstraat)The place to shop for skateboarders. Run by an ex-Belgian skateboard champion.
Metro (Meir) The Meir is not exactly the hippest street in Antwerp, but Metro is worth a visit if you're in to classic street.

Freaky Fripp (Lange Gasthuisstraat) Small but stuffed with funky clubwear. Stylishly chosen second hand.
