Definition

An artist is someone who employs creative talent to produce works of art. The term may be used in connection with any career, often a branch of the arts—for example music, literature, and theatre—most commonly it refers to an individual who practises the visual arts or fine arts.

An artist will often specialise in a particular medium. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist [Feb 2005]

Genius [...]

A genius is a person imbued with distinguished mental prowess. This can manifest either as a foremost intellect, or as an outstanding creative talent. The term also applies to one who is a polymath, or someone skilled in many mental areas. The term does specifically apply to mental rather than athletic skills, although it is also used to denote the possession of a superior talent in any field; e.g., one may be said to have a genius for golf or for diplomacy. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genius [Apr 2005]

Creativity [...]

We can define creativity as innovation, particularly in artistic endeavours and writing. Much praised in principle, much derided in fact, creativity serves as a refuge for the outsider with imagination. Some of the ambivalent attitude to creativity may stem from seeing the creative process as parallelling or suggesting the ingesting of drugs, or simply viewing it as eccentric behavior that is outside of the mainstream.

The word "creativity" bears an implication of constructing a novelty without constituent components ex nihilo, as opposed to (say) alternative theories of artistic inspiration which posit the generation of visions from divine sources such as the Muses.

Creativity is not limited to the art and design realm, however. Problem solving in general may require a creative mind. Lawyers, accountants, people in sales, and others are often more highly valued if they are able to use a creative approach to their work.--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creativity [2004]

The DJ as an artist

A phenomenon in the music community (but primarily within the sphere of popular music) is DJs who are not simply "playing records" but are in fact creating new music out of the playback and mixing of pre-recorded media. Begun and developed in Jamaica in the 1960s by such influential DJs as Count Matchukie, King Stitts and U-Roy working with some of the most innovative sound recording engineers of the century including Coxsone, King Tubby, and the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry, the DJs employ various techniques as phrasing, sampling, scratching, the application of effects (e.g., delay, flanging, etc.), but most importantly, they speak or toast or rap over the music. In effect they are developing an aural montage that may be spontaneous/improvised or carefully crafted. This movement is dubbed turntablism. There are parallels in surrealism and the visual arts. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_jockey [Feb 2005]
