Since earning a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska in 1993, Carter Van Pelt has written for The Beat, Reggae Report, Dub Missive, Modern Drummer, High Times, and other magazines. His article, "Slyght of Hand," detailing the career of Jamaican percussionist Sly Dunbar, was published in Reggae, Rasta, Revolution (Shirmer Books, Simon & Schuster) in 1997. The Beat has published five of his articles as cover story features.

In the late 90s, Carter published four issues of a well-regarded reggae fanzine, 400 Years. He has hosted "400 Years: Radio Free Mondo" on KZUM 89.3 FM in Lincoln, Nebraska since 1995, and was the last journalist to do a substantial interview with reggae singer Dennis Brown.
