Profile

In 1947 Claude Autant-Lara released his film Le diable au corps, based on Radiguets's novel, and starring Gérard Philipe. Coming just after World War II, the movie caused some controversy on its turn. There would be a second - and heavily adapted - cinematic version of Radiguet's story, by Marco Bellocchio in 1986, that became notorious for its graphic scenes of sex. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Radiguet [Sept 2004]

I saw this film many years ago in 1983. Since then it has never appeared on French Television. Although one of the masterpieces of French Cinema has never been available on videocassette ?? A truly weird atmosphere where parts of the soundtrack are played backwards to indicate flashbacks and god knows where they got the music from for the funeral. The sheer insignificance of Marthe's death in relation to the overall joy at the Armistice being signed is striking. Gérard Philippe is experiencing internal sadness which is incomprehansible for the rest of the world around him. It appears that the original book by Raymond Radiguet caused quite a scandal at the time perhaps for this reason even today the film cannot be seen in France. Is it available in other countries ? The themes music by René Cloarec is quite haunting. The picture and sound quality is very poor, such a shame for such a moving film. Perhaps one day it will be remasterized and edited in VHS or DVD.A remake was made in the late 90's but is not a patch on the original.--(nicholas.rhodes@libertysurf.fr) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038476/ [Sept 2004]

--http://www.zulma.fr/TitresDetail.asp?L=265 [Jan 2005]
