The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - Robert Wiene [Amazon.com]

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is often dubbed the first art film. This is probably true since it preceded Ballet Mécanique (1924), Anémic cinéma (1926) and Un Chien Andalou (1929) as well as the work of the abstract film makers by several years. The difference with the art films that would follow is that Dr. Caligari was not really meant to be an art film. It was meant to attract a wide audience and at this it succeeded. It ran continuously at the same Paris movie house from 1920 through 1927, Hoberman and Rosenbaum have called it "the cult film par excellence." [Jun 2006]

Definition

A film intended to be a serious artistic work, often experimental and not designed for mass appeal. --The American Heritage® Dictionary [Oct 2004]

Art film is a film genre that covers a broad range of films. They are generally not American, not with a large budget and usually not an English language film. They also tend to be more explicit in areas that are not touched by American filmmakers. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_film [Oct 2004]

Art film is a film style that began as a European reaction to the classical Hollywood style of film making. Art film provides similar kinds of cinematic illusion that one finds in classical Hollywood, but by loosening the ties between its style and narrative concerns, it allows for increased subjective realism and authorial expressivity. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_film [Feb 2005]
