The Criminalization of the Sadomasochism Subculture

Related: SM - subculture

Sadomasochism has been called a “disease-spreading, violence breeding nuisance,”[i] and yet everywhere there is indication that popular culture has become obsessive about this particular subculture. Evidence of this fascination is all over the Internet, in bookstores, newspapers and magazines, movies, television shows, shopping malls and on the radio.

The problem is, the portrayals of the sadomasochism subculture in popular culture don’t necessarily reflect the realities of this subculture. What is the sadomasochism subculture actually like, how is it portrayed to individuals outside of this subculture, and how has this portrayal affected the freedom of those individuals involved in this subculture? In order to fully understand this phenomenon, both the popular culture representations and the actualities of this lifestyle must be explored. The misrepresentation of this subculture has perpetuated the belief expressed by many that individuals involved in this subculture are dangerous criminals.--http://forensicpsychresearch.freewebsitehosting.com/OnCriminalJustice/Sadomasochism.htm [Jun 2004]
