Profile

Belgian designer Dries Van Noten showed his first collection in 1985 and is now one of the most popular contemporary designers of his generation. His love for textiles and pattern sets his designs apart from his peers, mixing traditional elements of printing and weaving with contemporary cutting and styling techniques

From I.D. Magazine

Dries Van Noten’s culturally diverse style has made him one of the most successful of the ‘Antwerp Six’ designers who arrived at the London collections back in 1986. Born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1958 to a family of tailors, Van Noten enrolled at the city’s prestigious Academy in 1977; his debut collection of men’s shirts was bought by Barney’s in New York and Whistles in London. He opened his own small shop in Antwerp in 1985, the larger Het Modepaleis replacing it in 1989. In 1992, he showed his menswear collection in Paris; his womenswear line followed a year later. Van Noten is perhaps the most accessible Belgian designer, but his theory of fashion is far from conventional. He prefers to design collections ‘item by item’, offering his clients a sense of individuality, rather than slavishly creating a collection around one silhouette. Despite his success – he now has three stores and around 500 outlets worldwide – Van Noten continues to live and work in his hometown.
