Profile

James Pennington aka Suburban Knight has seen it all come round full circle. The evolution of Detroit techno is not just something he's been carefully watching for the past seventeen years, but something he's also been quietly directing. An addiction to Chicago House along with a few choice European electronic cuts from the likes of Kraftwerk, China and Yello Magic Orchestra in the early Eighties led to the production bug. Released on Derrick May's fledgling Transmat label, his early single "The Groove" was Transmat 003. Soon after came "The Art Of Stalking" [1990] and "The Worlds". His friend Kevin Saunderson heard one of his basslines and asked if he could use it. Et voila, "Big Fun", Inner City's first hit was born. Then along came the subsequent "Good Life"; the two singles remain arguably the most successful Detroit techno tracks to date. --Kate Butler for muse.ie
