American Underground Cinema Course
Course taught by Dr. Kay Dickinson, homepage: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/humanities/filmstudies/kayd.htmlBy its very nature, underground cinema is often hard to access. The library owns only a fraction of the films that will be shown as part of this module (most are not commercially available on VHS or DVD), so it is absolutely vital that you attend all of the set screenings. Likewise, many of the books on the subject are rare and you are advised to search out suitable texts not only from the Chancery Lane library, but also from Senate House and, in particular, the British Film Institute library on Stephen Street (King’s has a corporate membership). The more underground films you see, the better. There is usually an experimental strand in the London Film Festival and email lists such as those provided by Secret Cinema (www.secretcinema.co.uk) and London Cinephiles (www.london-cinephiles.org.uk) will prove invaluable if you are to expand your avant-garde film repertoire.
