A multitalented musician, singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer, Patrice Rushen made an indelible impression among the music-buying public of the late '70s and early '80s with her trademark fusion of jazz, funk, R&B, and pop.Within the structure of what was largely a white, male-run music industry where racism and sexism were par for the course, Patrice Rushen's emergence as virtually the only successful African-American female multi-instrumentalist, writer, and producer from the '70s and '80s remains a testament not only to her artistry but to her role as a pioneer for black women in music.
