On the Rhizome

Deleuze and Guattari develop the concept of the rhizome in their introduction to A Thousand Plateaus, Capitalism and Schizophrenia.1 Although a rhizome is conventionally thought of as a root like stem, Deleuze and Guattari have a different or indeed a broader conception of it. For Deleuze and Guattari the rhizome is a conception of space, an understanding of the immense number of interconnections, assemblages and arrangements of matter, machines, lines, bodies, sounds and so forth. The Rhizome is an expanse of deterritorialization, a deterritorialized plane of flux. --http://www.retortmag.com/content/07.03/id_article_incorporeal3.htm, accessed May 2004
