Definition
Rough sex is wild, energetic sexual intercourse. Bites, scatches, and bruising are not an uncommon result.
Although rough sex may appear violent, rough sex is not rape or sexual assault. Consent is the prime distinction. While rough sex is consensual, rape and sexual assault are not. (However, it may not be possible to give consent to certain activities in certain jurisdictions; see the Operation Spanner case for an example of this in the UK).
Rough sex can refer to any one of a number of fetishes. See also:
