Books

  1. Falling in Love - Francesco Alberoni [book, Amazon US]
It took me three years to find this. Was it worth it? Sure.
I was introduced to it in France three years ago, but my french language skills are too elementary to understand everything. So I had to find an English version. Very hard indeed.
But what is maddening is that hundreds of...books are shoved in our face and books like this cannot even be found in libraries. This book simply tells it like it is; love is not that complicated. The difference between love and "in love" are in fact profound and (yes) easy to understand. The book is very easy to read like many of the... books on "modern love". But, Alberoni doesn't mix words: if you are in love, it is like this! If it is not like this, you are not in love. Also, he points out the all-too-common scenarios of falling in love: in love outside marriage and the 'ones in love, the other is content with the arrangement' and of course 'one believes in love, the other doesn't'. I guess these concepts remain taboo and hence cannot be discussed.
Unlike the... self-help books, Alberoni doesn't tell you what to do or what you should do. I like this very much.
The problem is that he points out the challenge of our engrained institutions and how these things work against love. --planetputty for amazon.com
  2. Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex - Pat Califia [1 book, Amazon US]
Among the beacons of sex radicalism--alongside Susie Bright, Carol Queen, Kate Bornstein, and very few others--Pat Califia has been writing angry, sex-positive essays and politically charged erotica since the late 1970s. The bulk of her many nonfiction pieces is collected in this reprint of a book first published in 1994, providing a lively, informal history of the sex wars of the '80s and '90s--from the absurd, puritanical Meese Commission Report to the antiporn feminists to the unexamined attitudes behind the popular Re/Search book Modern Primitives. The chief apologist for the S/M community and one of the strongest voices in the anticensorship fight, Califia is at her best when the subject is closest to home. Her peevish reflections on the stupidity and political shortsightedness of anti-S/M feminists and lesbians are a joy to read; you can hear the swish of her whip and the stamp of her boot heel. With its excellent introduction, this book should be on the shelf of every feminist, every lesbian, every sexual adventurer, and anyone who hopes to understand sexual politics in America. --Regina Marler
  3. A Natural History of Rape: Biological Bases of Sexual Coercion - Randy Thornhill [1 book, Amazon US]
"Rape is an act of desperation, a confession of envy and exclusion. All men- even, I have written, Jesus himself- began as flecks of tissue inside a woman's womb. Every boy must stagger out of the shadow of a mother goddess, whom he never fully escapes....Women have it. Men want it. What is it? The secret of life..."(Vamps & Tramps p. 32) - Camille Paglia
