Mericana records was founded by The Cayre Brothers in the beginning of the seventies. First release on Mericana was Tempo 70 (1972), with material written by Bebu Silvetti.

In 1974 Joe Bataan recorded an album called 'Salsoul' on the Mericana label: XMS124. It appears that this album gave the Salsoul label its name.
