Trip hop

Definition

Trip hop, a term coined by United Kingdom dance magazine Mixmag, describes a musical trend in the mid-1990s; trip hop is downtempo electronic music that grew out of England's hip hop and house scenes. Characterized by a reliance on breakbeats and a sample-heavy sound pioneered by Coldcut's remix of Erik B and Rakim's Paid In Full, trip hop gained notice via popular artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, rock-influenced sound groups such as Ruby, California's DJ Shadow, and the UK's Howie B. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_hop

Hybrid Style

With a significant proportion of the British youth, regardless of colour, now [after 1984] grounded in Hip-Hop culture, the new UK Dance era was well and truly under way and it wouldn’t be long before musicians and DJ’s here began to create their own hybrid styles, most notably in Bristol where Electro was fused with the reggae vibes of dub and Lovers Rock, to bring about a unique flavour that would later be known as trip-hop. --Greg Wilson - November 2002

Kruder & Dorfmeister

Kruder & Dorfmeister, named after Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, is an Austrian duo most known for their downtempo-dub remixes of pop, hip-hop, and drum and bass songs. Their remixes are often flavored with bossanova or jazz sounds; some of their better-known works include remixes of Madonna's "Nothing Really Matters," Depeche Mode's "Useless," Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "1st of tha Month," and Roni Size's "Heroes." Many of these are collected on the double album The K & D Sessions.

Although they are best known for their remixing work, the duo has also gained a reputation around Europe for their live DJ performances, and to a lesser extent, their original compositions. Presently, Dorfmeister works with Rupert Huber under the name Tosca. Kruder released a solo album under the name Peace Orchestra in 1999.

Kruder and Dorfmeister own their own record studio, G-Stone Records, which releases some of its own albums, as well as others by Peace Orchestra, Dub Club, and Sugar B.. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruder_and_Dorfmeister [Apr 2005]
