After joining the London School Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Schools of Music she passed her exams with flying colours ultimately qualifying as a grade eight pianist. As well as classical, Uschi simultaneously discovered music that would influence her future, listening to London’s early sound systems and developing a passion for Soul, Funk, Jazz, Latin and Reggae.

On leaving school, Uschi took a job with southeast London production company “The Family” where she successfully trained as a programmer and worked as an in-house keyboard player for studio clients. It was here that Uschi encountered a number of key producers who rapidly became aware of her multi-faceted talents. One such contact was Ashley Beedle who

Uschi began to work with exclusively, finally leaving “The Family” after four successful years.

Uschi then became part of the Ballistic Boys and The Black Science Orchestra providing keyboard Uschi then became part of the Ballistic Boys and The Black Science Orchestra providing keyboard’s, string arrangements and her unique jazz overtones to their critically acclaimed productions.
She also worked with Ashley on remixes including Delta House of Funk’s R’n’B styled takes on Lewis Taylor, East 17 and Jodeci amongst many others. The Black Science Orchestra remixed many dance artists including India, Inner City and Urban Species. Over this period, Uschi also leant her extensive skills to productions by Tuff/Jam, Phil Asher (Henry Street’s Rising Sunz EP), Crispin Glover and DJ Disciple.

In 1997, Uschi scored a useful publishing deal with Deconstruction Records working as a co-writer with many of their artists; parting company with The Ballistic Brothers and Black Science six months later. Her current projects include material for Berlin based Jazzonova Records as well as a series of cuts for London’s newly re-launched Released For Pleasure; she has also co-written tracks for Andrea Parker’s debut album on Mo’ Wax. Collaborations with Robert Owens, Problem Kids and a Jazz-Funk project with Dee Ellington are in production as well as theme music for channel 4. With a future as bright and inspiring as her musical scope, Uschi Classen is a name to watch. 1
