Beautiful Tomorrow (2002) - Blue 6 [CD, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
Blue Six is the brainchild of Naked Music founder Jay Denis, a former New York City rock musician who saw dance music as his ticket out of obscurity. His Blue Six debut, Beautiful Tomorrow, is a virtual world of pristine house groove and ambient soul mood, with live instruments and sensual singers creating a glowing sonic tableau. Whether dancing or chilling, you'll find that Beautiful Tomorrow is a luxurious soundtrack for greeting the dawn. Beyond an occasional minimalist vibe, the only differences between tracks are the singers, who offer individual takes on the soul-diva template. Lisa Shaw opens the album with "Let's Do It Together," followed by Monique Bingham singing "Close to Home." Catherine Russell adds a personal touch to the title track and "Very Good Friends." Beautiful Tomorrow's tracks morph together, but with its sublime blue-mood message, grooving in place works like a charm. --Ken Micallef for Amazon.com [...]2003, Apr 30; 11:17 ::: reggae

ORLAN, This Is My Body . . . This Is My Software . . . is the first in-depth publication devoted exclusively to the past and present works by this well-known French performance artist. These newest performance-based works use her own body as the subject of aesthetic surgery, where she manipulates her features in accordance with ideals of feminine beauty appropriated from the history of art. Featured in this expanded version of the original 1996 publication, is a document of recent performances, past work, provocative visual images and critical essays. Caged Heat (1974) - Jonathan Demme [DVD, Amazon US]
The greatest women-in-prison film ever made, Caged Heat takes the traditional sex-and-violence formula of gorgeous babes behind bars, gratuitous nudity, and degradation at the hands of beastly guards and a corrupt system, and transforms it into rebel burst of grrrl power. Jonathan Demme's directorial debut, made for Roger Corman's New World Pictures in the glory days of 1970s drive-in moviemaking, wedges his message of empowerment in between the showers and the shock treatments. Russ Meyer alumnus Erica Gavin stars with tough cookie Juanita Brown as they lead the brassy set of cellblock babes through prison breaks and bank robberies, all pulled off with smarts and sass. These women are in control and manage to keep their dignity (if not their clothes) in this fast-paced, hard-edged picture, but it's Barbara Steele who practically steals the film as the repressed warden whose dreams look like a road show version of Cabaret. --Sean Axmaker for Amazon.com

Sex & Character - Otto Weininger [book, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
Otto Weininger's extraordinary life culminated in the publication of his timeless work Sex and Character. Soon after the publication he went to Italy to await results. There appeared to be none, and during the next four months an intellectual malady, described by his friends as "a too grave sense of responsibility," became acute. The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust (1972) - David Bowie [CD, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds! --Lorry Fleming for amazon.com [...]2003, Apr 24; 12:48 ::: Electroclash

Daughters of Darkness (1971) - Harry Kümel [DVD, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
Art-movie goddess Delphine Seyrig (Last Year at Marienbad) slinks through the plush Eurotrash settings as the deathless Elizabeth Bathory, Vampire Countess, in Harry Kümel's minor Dutch classic of lesbian erotic-gothic. Blood mingles with water during the languorous shower scenes. Set at an upper-crust seaside resort, the 1971 film recounts Bathory's plot to replace her current consort (Andrea Rau) with a fresher specimen, an abused newlywed whose brutal young husband is an inconvenience waiting to be eliminated. Although both the bi-sex and the neck-biting violence are tame by today's standards, the film has a graceful, gliding sense of pace that gets under your skin; something unspeakably kinky always seems to be just about to happen. It never quite does, but the mood lingers. See it with someone you love--or would like to. --David Chute for Amazon.com [...]2003, Apr 20; 10:46

But when she surrenders to her own forbidden fantasies, Eugenie becomes trapped in a frenzy of drugs, sadomasochism, and murder. Can a frightened girl in the grip of carnal perversion find sanctuary in the orgies of the depraved? Jess Franco, the infamous director of "Vampyros Lesbos" and "Venus in Furs," brings you this legendary erotic classic, based on the Marquis De Sade's notorious "Philosophy in the Boudoir" and co-starring Jack Taylor (Succubus) and Maria Rohm. Flaming Classics: Queering the Film Canon (2000) - Alexander Doty [book, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
In this penetrating and irreverent study, queer theorist Alexander Doty directs a gay gaze at six famous and well-loved films (The Wizard of Oz, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Women, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Psycho, and The Red Shoes), averring that "the coding of classic or otherwise 'mainstream' texts and personalities can often yield a wider range of non-straight readings because certain sexual things could not be stated baldly." Doty goes on to explain that he puts quotation marks around the term mainstream because he wants to position queerness inside texts and productions: "For me, any text is always already potentially queer." Once readers have gotten past Doty's argumentative and somewhat tortuous preemptive answers to queer critics of his work--some of which originally appeared as responses to criticism in an academic journal--they can luxuriate in his engaging, funny, and acute analyses of these films and his descriptions of the historical contexts in which they were made and first shown. His personal revelations are a joy to read, and his exasperation with uncomprehending others is no less potent a pleasure, as in his repeated complaint that he has been chastised for conducting readings that are "too queer," as if he were "recruiting" straight texts "as part of some nefarious or misguided plan for a queer takeover." In frustration, Doty blurts out that he can't possibly be "the only person who understands the Oz sequences of The Wizard of Oz as the fantasy of a teenaged girl on the road to dykedom." Anything is possible, of course, although Doty delivers a stylish and convincing argument. --Regina Marler for Amazon.com [...]2003, Apr 14; 09:40

I had heard of India through her work with MAW and was already a big fan of her vocal talents. On this album she really goes to town, along with Tito Puente who's amazing hands work the vibes like a dream. The Count Basie orchestra provide the perfect accompaniment, big double bass sounds and every other instrument you could hope to hear on one album. The title track gets straight in to it with Indias vocal gymnastics over a range of 4 octaves and a very catchy number, be warned; If you listen to this tune before work you will be trying to sing it all day. More quality tunes follow including an upbeat Love for Sale and highly melodic Crazy He Calls Me. For me the highlight is a version of To Be In Love [co-written by Vince Montana Jr and also handles vibes], the tune that she enjoyed success with Masters at Work. From then on the standard is set and it doesn't falter once. All in all a great purchase, tunes that I will still be listening to in 10 or 20 years time. --gilmerrik for amazon.co.uk [...]2003, Apr 10; 22:47

If you buy "mirror" to hear what all the hype about the rapture is, then you will not be dissapointed.
Mirror, was the rapture's first full length and with the first record a band is always in it's most primitive stage. This first outing by the rapture is very goth at times yet still has a lot of the elements of todays NYC version of the rapture. It even has some more good songs than the sub pop release "out of the races and on to the tracks."
First thing you'll notice is Luke Jenner's vocal styling is a wacked out version of the CURE's Robert Smith. This and the creepy keyboard sound sets a very dark mood that makes the goth genre pop up in peoples minds.
But with a song like "notes from the underground" you know that the band is also a little NO-WAVE, ART PUNK, DANCE PUNK, or whatever buzz word our music media is pushing on us currently. This song recalls british post-punkers Gang of Four. This is one of the best songs by the rapture only rivaled by their new song "house of jealous lovers" that is british dj's new fave. This song easily puts the rapture in the same scene as LIARS, the yeah yeah yeahs, interpol, and blah blah blah.
"Olio" plays off like a cure b-side. And another stand out track is "mirror".
This record is great. but the rapture is a great band. their e.p. after this "out of the races and onto the tracks" is another great release. when they release their new record (you can go to dfarecords.com to get them) you will learn why they are in every magazine out on the news stands right now. they are the cream of the crop or top of the genre.

In this talent-packed project, a varied cast of Detroit players were thrown into a studio for a few days to see what would happen. Produced by techno pioneer Carl Craig, the lineup includes jazz heavies (reedist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Geri Allen, and violin sensation Regina Carter), Motown session players (guitarist Percy Hughes and drummer Ron Otis), and various hip-hop and electronic people. The result is a tidy musical package crammed with rich ambient textures, percolating rhythms (stellar percussionist Francisco Mora sees to that), and strong grooves that still leave enough room for the jazz folk to solo comfortably. Ranging from the smooth-jazz-like "Revelation" to the interstellar bop of "Space Odyssey" to the outright hip-hop of "The Way We Make Music" to a surreal reading of Stevie Wonder's "Too High," the 14 tracks here have a little something for everyone, without sacrificing quality. How to DJ: The Art and Science of Playing Records (2003) - Bill Brewster, Frank Broughton [book, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
DJs have gone from being underpaid live jukeboxes to becoming premier entertainers, producers, businessmen, and musicians capable of commanding admiration from thousands and earning serious money. Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's Last Night a DJ Saved My Life was the definitive history of the DJ. Now they gather their mastery of the artistic and technical aspects of being a DJ into a clear, accessible, and entertaining guide. How to DJ is the perfect guide -- from the most basic keys to establishing a music collection and a distinctive sound, to elementary record-spinning, to the complex skills of scratching, hot-mixing, and beat-juggling, as well as the inimitable art of creating an evening of sound that is perfectly timed, balanced, and unforgettable. Diagrams throughout illustrate phrases, beat timing, and song structure with no reliance on music theory, and resource lists recommend everything from which songs are best (and most fun) to learn with, to good sources for building a library of disks, CDs, and MP3s. For those who want to turn pro, the authors give sage advice on the vagaries of the club and music business. Short quotes, anecdotes, and photos of famous DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and Derrick Carter are featured. [...]2003, Apr 08; 09:29

Born in the midwest just outside Chicago, Kellee Patterson grew up in Gary, Indiana. The stunningly beautiful youngster was equally talented. She began winning talent contests at the tender age of five and often found herself in competetion with Gary neighbors The Jackson Five. At many of these local contests Michael and his siblings would win the boys portion while Kellee took home the girls prize. These contests led to her singing professionally by the age of sixteen.
After finishing high school Kellee enrolled in a local college. While in college Kellee was asked to front a rock/pop band. "Groovy & The Electras" played school gigs and local pubs mainly doing covers of current hit songs. Kellee was often hailed for her renditions of Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin hits.

Soul Jazz are among the finest compilers of detailed and authentic re-issue compilations in the world and the third Nu Yorica Roots is no exception to their house rule of quality roots music. It focuses yet again on the development of Latin fusion within New York in the 1960s and is a fairly comprehensive spectrum of the sound, from Mambo and Latin-Jazz to Boogaloo and Descarga. To pick out certain tracks from this fantastic selection is nigh-on impossible, as every tune stands out in it's own right. Suffice to say that with dance-floor gems from the likes Ray Barretto ("Together"/"Acid") Eddie Palmieri ("Que Suena La Orquestra") Tito Puente ("Oye Como Va") and a number of equally excellent less well-known Nu Yorican dance movers, this is yet another wonderful Soul Jazz moment. --Found Sounds, Amazon.co.uk Review [...]2003, Apr 06; 12:45

Director Todd Haynes's celebration of the sex, drugs, and rock & roll of the British glam era of the early '70s, Velvet Goldmine, would be nothing without the music that inspired it. A few unusual absentees (no Bowie, Iggy Pop, or New York Dolls?), but folks such as Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, and T-Rex are represented. Several covers from the glam era are performed without much deviation by two supergroups: the Venus in Furs, featuring members of England's elite--Bernard Butler, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead; and Wylde Ratz, featuring Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Ron Asheton of the original Stooges, and Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Strongest are the originals submitted to the film: Shudder to Think tame their own experimental excesses to put forth two glam-worthy originals with "Hot One" and "Ballad of Maxwell Demon." Pulp deliver "We Are the Boys," which runs amuck with the dramatic stagepower of the finest glam. --Rob O'Connor for amazon.com

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami [book, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
Bad things come in threes for Toru Okada. He loses his job, his cat disappears, and then his wife fails to return from work. His search for his wife (and his cat) introduces him to a bizarre collection of characters, including two psychic sisters, a possibly unbalanced teenager, an old soldier who witnessed the massacres on the Chinese mainland at the beginning of the Second World War, and a very shady politician.
Haruki Murakami is a master of subtly disturbing prose. Mundane events throb with menace, while the bizarre is accepted without comment. Meaning always seems to be just out of reach, for the reader as well as for the characters, yet one is drawn inexorably into a mystery that may have no solution. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is an extended meditation on themes that appear throughout Murakami's earlier work. The tropes of popular culture, movies, music, detective stories, combine to create a work that explores both the surface and the hidden depths of Japanese society at the end of the 20th century.
If it were possible to isolate one theme in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, that theme would be responsibility. The atrocities committed by the Japanese army in China keep rising to the surface like a repressed memory, and Toru Okada himself is compelled by events to take responsibility for his actions and struggle with his essentially passive nature. If Toru is supposed to be a Japanese Everyman, steeped as he is in Western popular culture and ignorant of the secret history of his own nation, this novel paints a bleak picture. Like the winding up of the titular bird, Murakami slowly twists the gossamer threads of his story into something of considerable weight. --Simon Leake for amazon.com

Monday Michiru is a great American singer/songwriter that doesn't get recognition in the States for the classy work that she has constantly produced over the past decade. She has so many different styles that you could call her a bit of a musical schizophrenic. She has cut her teeth initially on the back of the acid jazz bandwagon along with the likes of the Brand New Heavies and Young Disciples but to put her in that silo would be totally misleading. She has crossed over into more mainstream Jazz has infused Bossa rhythms, trip-hop, hip-hop and various other forms into her music. Check her out on the Mondo Grosso MG4 album from last year and you will get a taste of her great variety.
She is the jack in the box to the little child. Always exciting when the box is opened and never quite sure when or in Monday's case what will emerge once the box is opened. What there can be no doubt about is that the music will be quality with fine vocals.
You could roll many of your favourite comtemporary singers together and they probably still wouldn't cover the variety of guises that Monday has assumed throughout her career.
The Four Seasons CD is a collection of her four seasonal EP's with some new music for this album. As for stating my favourite tracks on the double CD is very hard suffice to say there are plenty of fine tracks and not a bad one to skip over. Current personal favourites are "Something to Believe in", "Chasing after the sun [Barefoot & pregnant version]", "Mysteries of life [5th season version]" and the soul bossa "Fallin' ".
All I can say is that you are in for a listening treat and it will put a smile on your face to experience such great uplifting music. --acid_win for amazon.com [...]2003, Apr 02; 22:32

Edits By Mr K (2003) - Danny Krivit [1 CD, Amazon US][FR][DE][UK]
Classic club tracks galore -- all remixed by the godlike hands of the legendary Danny Krivit! Danny was part of the New York scene back in the day, and he was around in the clubs working when most of these gems first came out -- and was also forward-thinking enough to figure out the art of remixing when few others were giving it a try -- taking already-great tracks, and opening them up even more with a fantastic approach to space and rhythm! This set's a stunning collection of his best work in the remix department, and presents 10 gems from the glory days of the disco dancefloor -- all served up with a great set of notes that features photos, details on the mixes, and some very interesting reflections from Danny. An essential set -- both for the novice and the longtime collector of such rarities -- with remixes of "Catch The Rhythm" by Caress, "Where Is The Love" by Betty Wright, "Love To The World" by LTD, "You Got Me Runnin (Breakdown edit)" by Lenny Williams, "Dance To The Music (medley)" by Sly & The Family Stone, "Give Me Your Love" by The Sisters Love, "I Can't Stop Talking" by Genie Brown, "Koke" by Tribe, "Bra" by Cymande, "Ask Me (re worked)" by Ecstasy Passion & Pain, and "No One Gets The Prise (re-edited Jimmy Simpson rmx)" by Diana Ross.--dustygroove.com

The soundtrack to a backstairs revolution which will scare your parents but will probably die at the first hurdle. But that shouldn't stop you trying, right??!!! More astounding sexy tunes from the mighty Alec, the late Carl Crack and the eternally hoarse and disturbingly seductive Hanin Elias (whose solo album is also superb), not that the others are not of course (too much eyeliner). ATR have continued to be a breath of fresh ox in the constant pollution of newspeak bull we seem to be fed constantly! The news of the banning of this album in Germany is particlarly disturbing! As a huge DHR fan myself I can't say this is my favourite, but tracks like "Destroy 200 years of culture' are simply of classic status in popular music, of a much needed kind in this Celine Dion obsessed mire of flatline chaff. Electrocute the mainstream! Buy Future of War!!! And wear lots of shiny black clothes!!
Check out EC8OR too, (with the disturbingly seductive Gina V. D'Orio !!!)

Toronto native Merrill Nisker began her musical quest in a folk duo called Mermaid Hotel, later punking things up in Fancypants Hoodlum. Inserting herself into the Toronto in-crowd, she participated in a Canadian sub-indie supergroup called the Shit -- a side project that lives on in legend with its tales of Albert Ayler noise larded with X-Ray Spex attitude. This is where she found her voice and her new persona as Peaches -- a sex-crazed autonomous woman hurdling through the world seducing all in her path. She teamed up with a fellow Shit named Gonzalez in a memorable duo, Peaches & Gonzalez, renowned for sexy live shows that would still have sent Larry Flynt speeding for the exit elevator. Peaches relocated to Berlin, where her neo-disco sex-raps caught on big. The rest is history -- Elastica tour, "Lovertits" single, press hype at every turn. Taking a Weimar approach to stage performance, she could be either ruthlessly experimental and strange, or bravely solicitous and sexy. The reviews were mixed -- some critics even considered her the worst live performer they'd ever seen. Despite the fact that her songs were unequivocally about het sex, her audience included a healthy contingent of gays, queers, lesbians, transsexuals. She was clearly doing something right. The world awaited her debut album, The Teaches of Peaches. -- Mark Desrosiers for popmatters, accessed Apr 2003

Beaches and Canyons - Black Dice [CD Amazon UK]
I'd read good things about Black Dice, how they were the new gods of the Art-noise scene. Sadly, this doesn't cut it for me. Sure, it's plenty noisy in places, and pretty experiemental throughout, but there's something missing. It sounds very similar to the Acid Mothers Temple, with that psychedelic influence over it, and I didn't like them either. Oh well! -- leecotton for amazon.co.uk [...]2003, Apr 01; 13:02
Planet Patrol - Planet Patrol [CD, Amazon US]
Gone are the days of trying to get this record on ebay (too many times to name of being outbid on the original vinyl release). This is a must have for any fan of the old school breakdance/ pop-lock era. I personally liked "Play at Your Own Risk" over "Planet Rock" just because there was more emotion and music happening on this track. The 12" mix is included on this disc as a bonus. Other stand out tracks are "Cheap Thrills" and the Gary Glitter cover "I Didn't Know I Loved You (til I saw you Rock n' Roll)". "It Wouldn't Have Made any Difference" is a slow ballad that slows down the momentum of the CD. The Lil Jon remix of P.A.Y.O.R. seems more like a filler than a bonus track. "Danger Zone" (remix) stays true to the original. Now if they had only pressed the CD in different colors! Excellent packaging with original artwork and nice inside design for those of us who own the original Tommy Boy 12" singles. Bring on the Planet Rock LP! --EUGENE SOTELA for amazon.com [...]
