  • Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left[1 CD, Amazon US]
Rarely has an album been recorded that is more tragically self-aware than Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left. The title refers to the marking on the inside of a packet of cigarette rolling papers that indicates only five more remain; a prophetic title indeed, given that five years after the release of his stunning debut album, Nick Drake would be dead at the age of 26. -- [more on Nick Drake]

A wealth of spacey disco tunes -- all selected by Kenny Dope for this massive 3CD set! 2 of the set's CDs feature unmixed tracks -- a total of 18 in all, with a wide range of obscure dancefloor numbers from the 70s and early 80s, especially those that have had strong currency in recent years, thanks to a far-thinking approach to production and instrumentation. Disc 3 of the set features Kenny mixing together tracks on the other two -- coming up with a swirling batch of grooves that are all linked by the unique Dope approach! There's loads of choice rarebits in the set -- and tracks include "Just As Long As I Got You" by Love Committee, "I Need You" by Sylvester, "Powerline" by Double Journey, "In The Bush" by Musique, "Go Bang" by Dinosaur L, "Me & The Gang" by Hamilton Bohannon, "You Got Me Running" by Lenny Williams, "Grooving You" by Harvey Mason, "Got To Have Your Love" by Clyde Alexander, "Keep On Dancin" by Gary's Gang, "Life On Mars" by Dexter Wansel, "Delerium" by Francine McGhee, "Jazz Carnival" by Azymuth, and "Here I Go Again" by Thelma Houston.

  • Irréversible a French movie by Argentian Gaspar Noe, his second after his 1998 debut was just released here in Belgium. In some aspects harder as "Requiem for a Dream" but not as brilliant. I liked some of the darker horror scenes.

  • St Germain - Boulevard[1 CD, Amazon US]
This fine French work by Ludovic Navarre was released in 1995. Very euro in its US sound. This is a recent re-release with extra tracks.
inally released in 1995, Boulevard sold over 300,000 copies worldwide, was elected Record of the Year in England and served as a cornerstone for a legion of artists and producers interested in trying to capture its elusive and sexy grooves. Boulevard, new version the complete series includes two special extra songs, including the rare early hit "Alabama Blues," both taken from 1999’s From Detroit to St. Germain, a compilation of cuts recorded over seven years.

  • http://www.iterature.com/adwords/ The Google AdWords Happening or "How to lose money with your art ?" - Christophe Bruno
Words already had some kind of exchange value, but we hardly realized it : if I insult somebody, I will get something in return, such as a punch in my face for instance. But now there is no doubt anymore. The word "sex" is worth $3,837, the word "art" $410, "net art" is only $0.05 (prices on the 11 of April 2002). Prices are determined according to the number of search requests and an average Cost-Per-Click. [more on Art]

  • Femi Kuti - Remixed [1 CD, Amazon US]
Femi Kuti is the son of Fela Kuti, in this 2000 project he is remixed by Kerri Chandler, Francois Kevorkian, MAW, Ashley Beedle, Mateo and Matos, Joe Claussell, who is Dixon, Chari?
One of the best Afrobeat releases ever - primarily due to the phenomenal mix. While Femi's father Fela's afrobeat succeeded in spite of lacadasical mixes, here a group of mostly french producers lay a thick and drum-heavy house style mix on Femi's contemporary take on afrobeat and the result is fantastic - this double CD pushes afro-beat into the 22nd century with a nod and a wink to King Tubby on the way. The usual afro beat horn arrangements are pushed to the background allowing a unique focus on the rythmic elements. I hope Femi continues in this direction instead of following the usual label-charted path for African mucisians - packing releases with lame guest spots by rappers and rockstars - stay underground, Femi, and keep it real. -- RP from NYC for amazon.com

  • Shinehead - Rough & Rugged [1 CD, Amazon US]
Debut album by Shinehead, it was preceded by a twelve inch which includes both a cover version of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" and Junior's "Mama Used to Say".
Shinehead cut a album for Sly and Robbie in -86 called Rough And Rugged. The album sparkled with talent. It covered lots of different styles and Shineheads performance was extraordinary. Unbelievably inventive and fresh. A mix of singing, DJ:ing, rapping and whistling. [more on reggae]

  • Chuck Mangione - Land of Make Believe [1 CD, Amazon US]
Land of Make Believe is a live concert album, recorded before Chuck Mangione broke through with his hit "Feels So Good". It's a great view into some of his earlier (and argueably better) music. To me this album rests on two songs: "Land of Make Believe" and "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor". Legend starts off this set with a driving percussion riff. It then breaks into a great, upbeat tempo'ed, instrumental piece that provides many solos to enjoy. Land takes the concert into another direction, bringing a great vocalist onto the stage to mesmorize you. The lyrics to the song are at once both hopeful and haunting, and the music just absolutely soars. All other songs on this album, although decent in their own right, pales in comparrison to these two.

  • Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil: Colecao Samba Soul [1 CD, Amazon US]
In a word -- WOW. Probably the best funk album ever recorded in Brazil, and certainly one of the best Brazilian pop albums as well. Features the often -anthologized "Umbabarauma" and the super-funky "Xica da Silva," along with a whole slew of other great tracks, such as the James Brown/Sly Stone inspired "Hermes Trismegisto Escriveu" and other groove-heavy wonders. A couple of songs are too shrill -- less disco flirtations than just plain old pop-funk gone jittery. One such track is an unfortunate remake of "Taj Mahal," the song from which Rod Stewart swiped the melody to "If You Think I'm Sexy"... Nevertheless, this is a masterpiece, one of the best Brazilian albums of the '70s. Absolutely essential, required listening. -- Joe Sixpack for Amazon.com [more on Jorge Ben]

  • Talkatif - Antibalas [1 CD, Amazon US] Brooklyn's 14-member collective Antibalas offers what is easily one of the best live shows around; pulsating energy radiates from the stage. The socially conscious group's name translates as "bulletproof" (literally, "antibullets"), but the musicians fire off lines with military precision. Their sound, while obviously indebted to legends like Parliament and James Brown, is so totally saturated with the spirit of Fela Kuti's Afro-beat that their music would sound as natural in Lagos, Nigeria, as it does in New York. But so often a band is better live than on record, and (scarily enough) the reverse is frequently true as well. Thankfully, Talkatif confirms the promise of Antibalas's earlier record Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1--that this band is as solid on record as it is live. The equally welcome news is that this follow-up sounds as fresh and vital as the first disc, although the formula is largely unchanged except for the increased emphasis on instrumentals. -- [more on Antibalas]
