Mo & Benoelie

Before 2003, the Glimmer Twins were known as Mo & Benoelie.

Serie Noire 2

Belgium’s Glimmer Twins aka Mo & Benoelie, have compiled the second volume in Eskimo Records’ ‘Serie Noire’ compilation series, due out December 8.

The duo whose anarchic DJ blends collide hip hop with house and electro and old with new, continue the 80s revival series, which launched at the tail end of last year. Again ‘Serie Noire II’ presents a historical overview of key electronic cuts from the past, which are influencing the producers and DJs of today. Specific attention is paid to the brooding, dark electronics of the Belgian new beat scene, which emerged out of clubs like Ghent’s Boccaccio and Antwerp’s AB.

Key points include Giorgio Moroder’s ‘Evolution’ which soundtracked TV sci-fi series, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and Crash Course In Science ‘Flying Turns’ which was sampled for Andrea Doria’s faggy electroclash anthem, ‘Bucci Bag’, plus many more from the likes of Adonis, Green Velvet and Blancmange.

The package includes track by tracks sleeve note explanations, memorised snippets of which should help you impress your mates at house parties. --via http://www.burntblue.com, 2003

    The Glimmer Twins

Mo & Benoelie are now (Sept 2003) called The Glimmer Twins, the name "Mo & Benoelie" was a bit of a problem abroad

They have been heavily involved in Belgian nightlife and have captured and spread the vibe of various genres of electronic and dance music since the early 80s until the present day. One word defines their choice of music and style of mixing: soulful. Their single goal as DJs is to make everybody move, in which they succeed each and every time by bringing a mix of the best popular and contemporary music. Profile

Mo & Benoelie are two sound freaks annex DJ's with a passion for pleasing the crowd. They have been a part of the Belgian party scene from the early days of the "roaring 80ies" through to a variety of electronic music of the '90s. Their varied mix selection can be pinpointed by their need for soul fullness. Their most striking quality is that they can make everybody move, by choosing and combining the best records out of the history of popular and contemporary music. Now Mo & Benoelie are resident-dj's at Culture Club (the new Belgian top club), Eskimo, Bel Mondo, Kozzmozz and Poplife.

Inspired by Grandmaster Flash and DMC contest tapes they started DJ'ing together in 1985 in a small club in Ghent. They covered not only hiphop but also popular tunes from that time and classics from way back. In '92 Mo & Benoelie went along with the house revolution and from that moment on, they were invited to the most important gigs in Belgium and in the rest of Europe. They played with the likes of Carl Craig, Moodymann, Alex Patterson, Juan Atkins, Depth Charge, Derrick May, Dave Clarke, Ashley Beedle, Harvey, Faze Action, Kevin Saunderson, Aphex Twin, Howie B, Dzihan & Kamien, Kruder & Dorfmeister. In the meantime Benoelie worked in "Music Man", the major record & import shop in Belgium. His passions for sounds made him quit his job and take up an audio engineering course in Amsterdam. He was also A&R-manager at R&S records. Mo just finished his Art school in Amsterdam (famous Rietveld academy). Now he's busy with a sound installation project all over Europe….

They made the crowd go wild at l'Aeronef (Lille, France), Mix Move 2000 (Paris), Printemps De Bourges 2000 (France), Warner Bros/London Records Anniversary 2000 (U.K.), Nighttown (Rotterdam, Holland), WesterGasFabriek (Amsterdam, Holland), Art Is Everywhere 1999 (Letland, Estland), Lux club (Lisboa, Portugal) Dour Festival '96, '99 and 2000 (Belgium) and in all major Belgian clubs as there are The Fuse, Mirano Continental, Ancien Belgique, Cafè d'Anvers, Fill Collins, Fifty Five, I Love Techno, 10 Days Off..., Silo, Food) Over the years they have been digging through their extensive record collection to compile several compilations including the successful Eskimo compilation (Vol 3 out now). They also compiled the Free The Funk Compilation 1,2,3,4 and 5 (R & S Records), STRAIGHTFROMVINYL session one (R & S Records 2000) and last but not least Blue Note's Sidetracks Vol. I (Blue Note - EMI). In addition to this they made a couple of remixes including Spank Da Monkey (Wally's Groove World 1997) and Voodoo Experience - tribal electro (NOISE 1998).

They're definitely ready for the get ready.-- http://www.foodbooking.be/bio/moandbenoelie.htm

    Mo Becha

Mo Becha combines a passion for sounds, in the form of soundscapes and soundsculptures, with work as a DJ.

Mo Becha (b.1970, Ghent) makes sound installations for specific spaces. He is a sound collector. In constructions sometimes endearingly knocked together, he examines the sculptural qualities of sound, the way it moves in space, and how it is related to the form from which it originates. He himself talks more about atmospheres and sound collages than musical compositions. The hissing of the loudspeaker is just as good a starting point as electronic music.

Mo Becha also operates as a DJ (Mo & Benoelie) on the club circuit. The DJ set-up a techno raves often amounts to a sdonic bombardment for more than 1500 partygoers.

He sees his sculptural installations as a counterbalance in which subtle differences, small details, and the direct contact with a single spectator can make a world of difference.

His installations introduce new relationships between form and sound and have a very evocative effect on the visitor, who usually has to interact in order to grasp the scope of the complete installation.

A striking element in Mo Becha's artistic progress is his joint ventures with other artists such as David Neirings and DD Trans.

This has resulted in several exhibitions (Gallery In Situ, several artfairs, public spaces,...).

Producers of compilation CDs have become so adept at their trade that now no sound or era goes undocumented. Yet the professionalism and unimpeachable taste that marks compilations like New York Noise (dedicated to Gotham’s early-eighties “no wave” moment) is beginning to feel joylessly curatorial. So Belgian D.J. duo the Glimmer Twins’ compilation Serie Noire 2 sounds not just welcome but something like a tectonic shift. On the disc, the Glimmer Twins trace a sensibility—alternately bassy, druggy, and camp—through disparate eras like industrial, acid house, and New Wave. The pair make one astounding connection after another, from the metallic dub of Public Image Ltd. to the Muzak-y, department-store pop of German rockers Rheingold. Where fellow Belgians 2 Many DJs mocked po’-faced D.J. culture with garish mixes of Michael Jackson and Daft Punk, the Glimmer Twins thread their needle through seemingly impossible-to-reconcile material. It’s a secret history of pop that only the savviest historian could write. --ethan_brown@newyorkmag.com, From the Feb 2, 2004 issue of New York Magazine.

    6. Eskimo Vol.4 - Various Artists [Amazon UK]
Once again Eskimo (the Glimmer Twins and Dirk) serve up another chunk of funk, disco and 80's hipness straight from their decks. I never thought I'd be listening to Sydney Youngblood (remember he?) and Angie Stone in the same mix. Eskimo take 70's, 80's and 90's music and mix them seamlessly together - with the odd snippet of ("what's that? I'm sure that sounded like...") other artists thrown in for good measure. This CD bats it's eyelashes at cheesiness then turns around and throws a rum and coke in it's face. Quite simply, this is FAN-BLIMMIN-TASTIC. Imagine sitting on a block of ice in an igloo, with the air conditioning on full blast, sucking on an ice-lolly - this CD is that cool. If you have any of the other Eskimo recordings and like the style, then this is another must-have addition. If you've never listened, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST...fun and hip, music doesn't have to be serious all the time. This will make you smile, click your fingers and dance. --ickleshark, amazon.co.uk
