Leroy Burgess
Biography
Leroy Burgess is a prolific disco producer and vocalist from Harlem. Beginning his career in the late 1960s in a group called the Mellow Sounds, he soon came under the wing of Patrick Adams, who renamed the group Black Ivory. They produced several albums of soul ballads.
In Black Ivory, Burgess frequently collaborated with Adams on songwriting, and continued to work with him later in his career.
"Mainline" by Black Ivory was Burgess' first major disco hit, followed by "Weekend," which was recorded by Patrick Adams' project Phreek. (The song was later covered by Class Action, and was given an extended mix by Larry Levan, becoming a hit in the early 1980s.)
He went on to produce a substantial number of hits for such artists as Logg, Inner Life, The Fantastic Aleems, Fonda Rae, Universal Robot Band and Intrigue. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leroy_Burgess [Aug 2005]

Leroy Burgess is one of the most criminally underrated artists on the whole black music scene. He has been one of the most prolific but consistently high quality artists since the start of the 70's. In his career he has worked with a huge array of artists, and yet released strangely few records under his own name. http://www.leroyburgess.com/
Leroy's first vinyl outing came via the Black Ivory album "Don't Turn Around" issued in 1970 on Today records (whose sister label, Perception was responsible for many of the early Fatback Band releases). At the time he was just 16 and still in school. His partners in Black Ivory (Russell Patterson and Stuart Bascombe) were equally youthful, and this is apparent from the vocal. on the albums, which are falsetto to the extreme. When I express my surprise to Leroy that the lead voice was his he responds reasonably enough ... [taken from a concrete funk interview]
Leroy recorded for Salsoul, Vanguard, Jump Street, Atlantic, NIA, ... At least two of his tracks have been remixed by the great Larry Levan. Namely "I Know You Will" by Logg and Weekend (an oringinal Phreek track, later rerecorded by Class Action feat. Chris Wiltshire).Logg (1981) - Logg
