  • Irina Ionesco[Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    Irina Ionesco was born in Paris in 1935, the daughter of Romanian immigrants. She spent her childhood years in Constanta, Romania, at the threshold between East and West, before returning to France in 1946. Her first photographs appeared in the 1960s. Since 1970, her work has been exhibited in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, England, Egypt, the US, Japan and Germany. Irina Ionesco lives and works in Paris. "I adore all that is excessive, dreamlike, curious. So I have adopted as my own these words by Baudelaire: 'In art, only the bizarre is beautiful.'"

    For Irina Ionesco, photography is a poetic medium. The pictures of female nudes collected here are witness to genuine encounters between women and, because Ionesco's daughter Eve is frequently the subject of her photography, between mother and daughter. Born in Paris, Ionesco spent her childhood years in the port city of Constanta, Romania. Deeply affected by the loss of her mother in childbirth, her photography is also the pursuit of the motif of suffering: the painful experience of the absence not only of her mother's affection, but of the memory of her image. This desire for an encounter with a mother's face is a dual one: Ionesco strives to recreate a sense of both visual recognition and affection in an ethical sense. --http://www.children-in-art.com/eva/en/irina_ionesco.html

  • This look interesting .... French Cuts Vol.1 [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    Strange that this compilation should not be available in England and even stranger that it wasn't on amazon.fr. The cover art is of course of the Citroen DS. I don't know if the compilation is any good, but I like the DS. Vol.2 features a Citroen SM.

  • Beat At Cinecitta (Italian Film Score Anthology) - Various Artists - Soundtracks - Anthologies [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    A Sensual Homage to the Most Raunchy, Erotic Film from the Vaults of Italian 60's and 70's Cinema. Composers Featured Are Bruno Nicolai, Riz Ortolani, Roberto Pregadio, and More. A Must for Any Lounge/Cinema Music Fan.

    I just wanted to point out that Honda is using songs from this CD for their latest Civic ads in America. "Lena Sequence" by Roberto Pregadio is the music behind the "Joey, cut it out" aka "legroom" ad where the teenage boy in a car full of girls is trying to brush his legs up against his older sisters friends. "Cheops and Nefertiti" is in another Honda ad. Reviewer: A music fan from San Francisco, CA USA, amazon.com

    2003, Nov 25; 16:12 :::: gay

  • A History of Gay Literature: The Male Tradition - Gregory Woods [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    The very idea of a unique tradition of gay-male writing began relatively recently. Early in the 20th century, homosexual writers began to write more honestly. Yet writers, both gay and straight, have written about the experience of homosexuality since ancient times. In his encyclopedic overview, Gregory Woods has knitted together a transhistorical and transcultural history--a tradition--of gay-male writing over the centuries. Using a broad but readily applicable definition of gay literature that includes works by openly gay men, works in which homosexual activity occurs, and works that manifest a gay "sensibility," Woods manages to move us from Homer to David Leavitt, from Arabic poets of the classical age to contemporary South African poetry, from closeted Victorian memoirs to AIDS literature. By its nature, A History of Gay Literature lacks the specificity of critique that illuminates individual work, but this approach is more than compensated for by the book's ability to locate and discuss amazing similarities of experience and expression throughout history and culture. Highly intelligent, jauntily written, and endlessly informative, A History of Gay Literature is an impressive addition to contemporary gay scholarship. --Amazon.com

  • Botero : Women - Fernando Botero (Author), Carlos Fuentes (Author) [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    Since the age of nineteen-the year of his first solo exhibition-Fernando Botero has delighted his audience with the joyfully rotund figures that populate his canvases. Like any great artist, he was compelled to paint the female form. More than 100 of his greatest works devoted to the theme of women are collected in this oversized, deluxe volume, the design of which was overseen and directed by the artist himself. This book includes fifty unpublished works, numerous archival photographs, and vellum inserts printed with images made by Botero especially for the book.

    Botero never works from live models, as he feels it limits his creativity. The women in his work are inspired by the women he has known throughout his life-the vivacious neighborhood characters from his native Colombia. In the early 1950s, he left Colombia to study the paintings of great artists, such as Diego Velázquez and Piero della Francesca, all of which made a lasting impression on the artist.

    Accompanying the work of this incomparable artist is an introduction by one of the most respected Latin American writers of today, Carlos Fuentes. --amazon.com

    2003, Nov 03; 12:21 :::: Catherine Breillat

  • Romance (1999) - Catherine Breillat
    Possibly the most sexually explicit movie to hit the art-house circuit (although not as explicit as standard porn), Romance received a tremendous amount of critical acclaim when it was released, and made several film critics' Top Ten list for 1999. An intensely sexual woman is in an unhappy relationship with a man who refuses to have sex with her, and begins an exploration of casual, anonymous, sometimes kinky sex. Complex, intelligent, and sometimes disturbing, Romance takes sex seriously, acknowledging it as a powerful and legitimate part of life and giving it a respect rarely seen in mainstream or even art-house films. This is also porn star Rocco Siffredi's first foray into more-or-less mainstream film, and we hope it's not his last -- he proves himself to be a talented actor with a definite screen presence. This reviewer wasn't personally all that crazy about the movie (too much existential ennui for her taste); but then, she almost never likes French cinema, and lots of people she likes and respects thought it was brilliant. --http://www.blowfish.com/catalog/videos/art_movies.html

    Very explicit movie with scenes of fellatio, bondage, childbirth. This is a philosophical movie-essay deals with love, relationships, pregnancy and power. --jahsonic, Nov 2003

    2003, Nov 02; 19:06 :::: La Fura Dels Baus

  • La Divina Commedia (2003) - LA Fura Dels Baus, Paolo Russo, Luigi Settembrini [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
    La Fura dels Baus is a transgressive theatrical company based in Catalonia. Since the late 70s, the group has produced a repertoire of great emotional impact, recorded in this book via their extraordinary performance in Florence's Piazza Pitti, a performance in which they grappled with the hallucinations of man suspended between heaven and earth--that divine and transcendent chaos represented by Dante's Commedia.

    With all the hassle going on around artists from DJ Hell's label Gigolo like Tiga, Vitalic and Terence Fixmer... this last one has been able to created an incredible collection of legendary New Wave, Industrial and Punk classics for Belgium Techno label Music Man. For those who are familiar with the underground scene of the 072 area, this collection is simply creme-de-la-creme, cause this includes almost every bomb played by DJ's like Dr. Nutcracker [in his legendary and defunkt 'Nutcracker' Radioshow... R.I.P.], Electronome, IL Disco, Koert Notario, etc. in the late nineties on weekly basement parties. It may surprise you hearing tracks like for example No More's "Suicide Commando" ripped by DJ Hell for his "Munich Machine" album. Nonetheless this holds classics by A split second, Front 242, Liaisons Dangerueses, Psyche etc. which have been influential to numerous people like Carl Craig, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Mad Mike to name only a few.
